How can you reduce storage & disposal costs of Paper & Pulp residuals?

When operating a paper plant, reducing storage costs are vital to its overall production. The two primary factors in determining disposal costs of this waste stream are trucking and tipping fees.  Since the waste product is over half moisture, a proper treatment technique can reduce disposal costs by at least half.

A significant waste stream from the paper making process is called pulp and paper residuals.  Although post filter press, these residuals are over 50% moisture by mass and are typically trucked to a landfill as daily cover.

The simplest solution to remove the excess moisture in pulp and paper residuals is to treat them in Vulcan’s Paper & Pulp industrial dryer.  In a low temperature environment, the residuals can be dried without direct exposure to flame or excessive heat and the water being stripped from the pulp and paper can be discharged into the atmosphere.  Typically, a cyclone and scrubber or baghouse can be used to remove any fine airborne particulate prior to the release of the steam.

In lieu of sending the residuals to a landfill, many paper companies are seeking reuse of them as a part of the papermaking process or otherwise.  A dried residual can be used as animal bedding, insulation, floor dry, oil soak or a variety of other uses.   At worst, it can be a daily cover at the landfill for an even larger reduction in overall waste disposal costs.

If storage is the remedy versus disposal, reduction of the water content to a minimal amount eliminates souring of the material and eliminates an odor problem as well as reduction of volume by mass.

The Vulcan® Drying Systems Pulp and Paper Residuals Drying System is custom-designed and manufactured to improve a customer’s individual drying needs, whether it be reduction of mass for transportation or preparing the waste stream for an alternate use. These drying systems are designed specifically to dry each customer’s product to their desired output moisture content range.
